This could also refer to world war 1.. they used a war tactic called the scorched earth policy, they destroyed their crops trees , grass.. everything they could so the enemy could not feed off of them.. also WW1 was the first war to where they used airplanes to attack from the air.. that to John could have very well looked like Hail Falling as fire from he sky.And The #1 one weapon used during WW1 was a rifle which also could have looked as hail and fire.Also the planes used in this war were called "The Flaming Coffins"... why? because if it was hit by an enemy they would blow up and fall to the ground. which could also look as if it were hail and fire mingled with blood. And A trumpet in the greek language literally means to throw into a tremor of fear of concern.
